New Year, New You: Make 2018 Your Best Year Yet!

Creating a New Year resolution or two is a common way to focus on your goals. Next, you’ll need to make a plan to work toward them. However, instead of making a couple of resolutions, consider turning 2018 into an even better year with a list of goals that cover different aspects of your life, such as health and work. Keep the following tips in mind when you come up with your list.

Write Goals Down

Having vague goals in your head won’t do much to motivate you to achieve them. Writing them down gives you a better way to focus on each goal and make a concrete plan for accomplishing it. Keep your written list of goals handy to remind you to work toward them as often as you can. You might want to hang your list on a wall so that you can see it easily throughout the day.

Have Others Hold You Accountable

One of the best ways to motivate yourself to reach your goals is by telling other people about them and having them hold you accountable. For example, tell a friend or loved one about a goal to lose a certain number of pounds or save a specific amount of money, then have them ask you how you’re doing on a regular basis. Since you know that you’ll have to answer to them, you’ll be much more likely to stick to your goals and make progress toward them. Letting others in on your goal list can also provide you with social support and encouragement when you’re struggling.

Set Realistic Expectations

Having realistic expectations for your New Year’s goals is extremely important. When you set a goal that’s too difficult to achieve, you’re likely to lose interest and stop pursuing it. Setting goals that you can realistically achieve helps keep you on track and provides you with continued motivation to work on accomplishing them. Keep in mind that your goals should include a mix of lifetime and short-term goals. You can work gradually toward lifetime goals a little at a time while focusing on taking more immediate steps to reach your short-term goals.

Set Goals the S.M.A.R.T. Way

When you’re coming up with a list of goals that you want to accomplish in 2018, be S.M.A.R.T. about it. Any goals you set should be Significant, Meaningful, Action-Oriented, Rewarding, and Time-Bound. This means focus on goals that are significant to you and ones that you can easily track. Your goals should also be ones that allow you to measure your progress as you go along. S.M.A.R.T. goals should also be highly rewarding for you and focused on actions that you can take to accomplish them rather than vague or non-specific.
